Support Local

A loop around Great Sacandaga Lake, not a feed from a billion-dollar company.

Google, Yelp, and the big marketplaces are built to extract. They rank who pays, who has the most anonymous stars, and who already shows up nationwide. The work that actually keeps this lake going — the cleaner two roads over, the marina that knows the water, the pop-up that only lives on Instagram — never wins that game.

This directory is the opposite bet: local commerce as a community, not as inventory. Neighbors find neighbors. A marina sends dinner traffic to a diner. A diner sends a leaky pipe to a local plumber. Money that stays here pays the person who plows your road in January.

How trust works here

We don’t use five stars. Stars get gamed, bought, and averaged into mush. Around Great Sacandaga Lake, the question that already gets asked in The Great Sacandaga Lake Life is simpler: would you send a neighbor there?

  • Neighbor vouches — Google or Facebook sign-in, then one tap. First name, town, and photo. One per person per listing. That’s a referral, not a review farm.
  • Verified owner — the person who runs the place claims the listing. Unclaimed pages stay lower. Those rise.
  • A complete page — phone, hours, a real town. Ghost listings with no way to call sink.
  • Reports — “this isn’t a real local business” knocks chains, closed shops, and spam down, then off.

Search can sort by Trusted. That’s the default when you’re not searching a word or asking for what’s nearest.

Operating together

The next layer is a local loop: businesses naming the other locals they already send people to. Not ads. The same quiet referrals that already happen at the counter. When a listing has those, we print them — so a visitor who found a marina can find a kitchen, and a kitchen can find a plumber, without leaving the lake.

“Anyone know a reliable cleaner?” now lives on Ask the lake. The board points at trusted listings first, so it doesn’t fill with whoever shouts.

If you need work done, ask the lake. If you run a place, list it. If you’ve been treated well, open the listing and vouch. That’s how this stays a community and not another marketplace.
