Mayfield Town Beach is the sandier public beach, off Route 30. GSLA has posted it for years: closed Monday and Tuesday, 11–6 Wednesday through Friday, 11–7 on the weekend, summer only. We put those hours on the listing so “open now” can actually mean something.
Northampton Beach is the DEC campground beach on Houseman Street. Day-use is allowed if you are not camping. The shore is more small stone than sugar sand. Lifeguards run mid-June to Labor Day. The campground, the launch, and the swim are the same property — busy in July, worth the DEC reservation if you want a site.
A rule of thumb
If it is a weekday, assume less. If it is after Labor Day, assume a lot less. If you need a sure swim for kids, call the campground desk the morning of.
